About the Author
Frank M. Turner (1944–2010) was John Hay Whitney Professor of History, director of the Beinecke Library, and university librarian, all at Yale University. Richard A. Lofthouse is editor of Oxford Today and formerly lecturer in modern history, Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford.

Could have been better

Be aware that this isn't really a book - it's a set of lecture notes republished after Turner's death by his former teaching assistants. And it reads as a set of lecture notes - meaning that you aren't going to get very much out of it unless you also read the books he talks about. This is only useful as a general introduction - if you don't have prior exposure to the topic, you will emerge from reading it knowing what you don't know. If you do, you will emerge wanting to read the source texts you haven't read yet. Also, Turner seems to have been a bit of a cranky guy. Phrases like "It was Rousseau who made the hatred of one's own culture the stance of a cultivated person" don't exactly inspire confidence in the impartiality of his observations. In summary: this is alright for a quick read, but don't expect any deep revelations. I wouldn't recommend this to a friend particularly strongly. And maybe not at all.

Wonderful Frank Turner!

This is a collection of Late Frank Turner's lectures at Yale written by his peers and students. it is a short introductory yet intense book covering topics as the name suggests: Nietzsche, Rousseau, Marx, Race, Nationalism, darwin etc. It is very enjoyable especially if you have a love for history and politics. There is a lot of implied background knowledge but even if you do not know much about these people, this is still a nice introduction to their thoughts.

A Distillation of a Life Time's Learning

How privileged were the students at Yale to hear in such clear and evocative language this introduction to thinkers who have shaped our culture. This is an excellent book for the general reader.
