Mezmerizing and well done

I have to admit: despite my hesitancy about hearing another author's version of A.C. Doyle's fascinating character of Sherlock Holmes, I purchased this Audiobook because of my (if I may be so circumspect) recent fascination with Benedict Cumberbatch. I have become a fan of his portrayal of Sherlock through BBC's TV program of the same name. When I had a long drive ahead of me, I purchased this audiobook because the richness of Benedict Cumberbatch's voice and my curiosity about the stories. This is an audiobook worth every penny (this is not a blatant bias). The stories are completely engaging, entirely believable, and written so cleverly that I had a difficult time believing it wasn't some long lost manuscript of A.C. Doyle's own creation. Benedict Cumberbatch (maybe a bit of bias here...) gives life and immediacy to the book with his talent for different voices, and accents (bravo especially for the well done American accent). All in all, this is a brilliant and worthy addition to the Sherlock Holmes oeuvre. Of course, my next question is: when can we expect more?

My daughters are both big fans of BBC's Sherlock series, and of Benedict Cumberbatch. They LOVE this! I got it as a Christmas present for one, but they both have listened to it repeatedly. The stories are entertaining, and the narration by Mr. Cumberbatch is the icing on the cake (and the initial reason for the purchase)! Arrived quickly and in great shape!

Enjoyed story. Hated certain characters.

I don't like to give this book a low rating because there are definitely things about it that I like. There was really just one element that ruined it for me.

First, I liked the creativity of the story. There are seemingly two unrelated story lines taking place throughout the book, but you know they must come together somehow. By the end of the book, the merging just begins, but it is still not fully apparent how it will all work together. Both story lines were creatively developed. The book didn't feel like a re-imagining of old themes to me. I enjoyed the continual intrigue.

Despite all of the things that I liked about the book, three characters ruined the experience for me. There are three archeologists on the trail of what may be the most significant discovery of all time about human prehistory. However, although they are apparently professional academics, they persistently behave like immature teenagers, pulling pranks on one another and hurling insults without end. Trish must ridicule and insult Jason at least ten times a day, yet his feelings still seem to be hurt every time ... and for some reason they are friends. This adolescent behavior was so consistent throughout the book with these three that it drove me bonkers. Someone was always telling someone else how stupid or fat they were, even in situations where there was imminent danger.

Sarah, the leader of the adolescent archeologists, became increasingly irrational toward the end of the book. She destroyed Mayan ruins, kicked in people's doors, and decided that dropping her pants was the best way to get someone's attention so that she could talk to him. She wondered if she might be addicted to adrenalin, but I think she might have been having a mental breakdown.

I apologize to the author for my scathing treatment of these particular characters, but I simply couldn't stand reading about them by the end of the book. Their behavior and mentality was not consistent with professional, educated adults. I did truly enjoy other aspects of the book though.

I will not read the next book simply because I cannot bear to deal with Sarah and her colleagues anymore. I hope this review will help other readers decide whether or not to read the book. I also hope the author will take this as constructive criticism and not just hurtful criticism.

Note to author: The word "whilst" is not used by Americans. Replace it with "while" when you are writing dialog for American characters.

So bad it's almost good

Why do I keep believing great reviews? The plot should have been a warning - human origins and dangerous asteroid. It's hard to find a single, complimentary thing to say about the book - a stinkeroo! It's all done so badly - characters, dialogue, description, sensible plot, quality of writing plus a complete lack of R & D on almost every subject. The author, an obvious reader of the King James Bible, uses the archaic term "whilst" (instead of "while") constantly. It did not lend gravitas to the writing. Absurdly, as the asteroid approaches, folks shop, order pizza, attend school, catch the latest episodes - no worries!

*** Plot Reveal (sorta) *** In 2017, a professor is placed in charge of saving mankind from a large asteroid arriving in 2040. Skip 23 years and...nothing has changed. Technology is circa 1998 - folks drive trucks, clunky cell phones, watch tv, read books, go shopping at the mall. Our heroine is convinced a race of advanced "giants" existed 500,000 years ago so she and her sidekicks jet around the world using an old object (that works by holding hands) to discover in hours what thousands missed for decades. The "archaeology" is absurd (instant finds, intact skeletons, wrong dating and preservation methods, etc) and why bother since those evil Catholics are conspiring to steal the evidence keeping the "truth" from mankind. (Who knows why.)

Meanwhile, professor has trouble from military/CIA folks - real shocker - so folks escape to yet another underground place, "Sanctuary". During the crash (a few paragraphs) China decides to nuke Japan and South Korea, effectively destroying her own economy. Add clunkers like hidden Mayan rooms (accessed by pulling a jewel on a wall) and a lame subplot of a home for the mentally challenged and it is without a doubt an unmitigated disaster. About the only survivalist / political cliche not present wa zombies but there is still book 2. My Grade - F

Fascinating story line and a cliff hanger ending.

I couldn't put it down, and was disappointed when it ended so abruptly. I try to avoid cliff hangers until I have the next book to continue, but got surprised by this one. Hoping I don't have to wait too long for book two.

Nice bird designs.

Nice book of patterns which can be useful for many artists and craftsmen. Birds are a nice subject for arts and crafts work. These patterns can be enlarged or reduced for your purpose. Gives one many ideas for making your own designs. Will be useful for years and is a great addition to my art library.

My first stained glass pattern book

Is a very good book! You could find right-angle and round patterns. The only thing I miss was the pictures with colours, but in general is good to start. There are basic and more complex patterns, for differents degree of difficulty.

Essays from a genius

According to the introduction this book was originally going to be titled "Occasional Writings". Which leads us to the question what "occasional writings" actually are. To quote the author:

"They are generally on topics about which the author had no specific interest. He was, instead, encouraged to write each one after being invited to contribute to a series of discussions or essays on a particular theme. It captured the author's interest and encouraged him to reflect on something he might otherwise have ignored (...)."

As for the reason why the publisher decided to use the title of the first essay for this book instead of the author's original idea, well those reasons should be obvious. "Inventing the Enemy" sounds a lot more intriguing than "Occasional Writings" ever could.

What we have here is a collection of 14 essays. The problem, when reviewing a collection of essays, is that there are always going to be pieces on subjects the reviewer knows little or nothing about and/or has no real interest in. That problem gets even bigger when the essays are written by a brilliant mind like Eco's. While I can honestly say that every single word in this book was fascinating to me, I also have to be honest enough to admit that quite a few of those words went straight over my head.

I have been in awe of Umberto Eco ever since I read "The Name of the Rose" and "Foucault's Pendulum", years ago. Here we have a man with what appears to be endless knowledge about numerous subjects. A thinker able to share his thoughts, both serious and absurd, in a way that intrigues his audience, even if the audience is not always capable of following his reasoning or establishing the accuracy of his ideas and assertions.

This book contains essays on a wide variety of subjects varying from light-hearted to serious, from historical to contemporary and from philosophical to factual. Below I will share thoughts on and quotes from some of these essays. That selection is however rather arbitrary since it is very personal and limited to those pieces that struck a cord with me.

Inventing the Enemy

"Having an enemy is important not only to define our identity but also to provide us with an obstacle against which to measure our system of values and, in seeking to overcome it, to demonstrate our own worth."

Examples ranging from Cicero to Ian Fleming, illustrate how the enemy has always been described using similar, if not identical, characteristics, regardless of who the portrayed enemy is. It seems that we cannot manage without an enemy and will create one when we find ourselves without an opponent.

Absolute and Relative

And the question whether or not there is such a thing as an absolute or relative truth.

Treasure Hunting

"The cult of the relic is to be found in every religion and culture.

Not so much philosophical as a listing of where to find which relics, which immediately makes the reader realise that certain relics can be found in more places than should logically be possible. But, of course:

"It is not the relic that makes faith, but faith that makes the relic."

Censorship and Silence

Two forms of censorship: censorship through silence and censorship through noise.

"To avoid causing behaviour considered to be deviant, don't talk about it, (...) To avoid talking about deviant behaviour, talk a great deal about other things."

"Nothing is more difficult to dispose of than an irrelevant but true story."

"In losing the condition of silence, we lost the possibility of hearing what other people are saying, which is the only basic and reliable means of communication."

Imaginary Astronomies

From the way we saw the world and the skies in the past to the emergence of science fiction. Including the fascinating question whether, if science fiction is influenced by science, the opposite is also true?

Living by Proverbs

The idea is fascinating; creating a society in which people live their lives based on the wisdom contained in proverbs as the way to happiness. That this is of course doomed to fail is obvious, but it makes for a very interesting idea.

Ulysses: That's All We Need

A denouement of Joyce's Ulysses that I can't help feeling shouldn't be taken seriously, although I'm completely lost as to what the purpose of this essay might be if that assumption is right.

Thoughts on WikiLeaks

WikiLeaks is of course, a false scandal since everybody knew, although nobody acknowledged, that embassies had turned from representatives of their countries into information gathering operations. Furthermore, the information sent to America was not actually secret.

While modern technology makes the Big Brother scenario all too realistic - it is next to impossible to go through life unobserved - WikiLeaks has shown that this is actually a two-way street. Those in power may be able to observe us, but we, at least those of us proficient at computer hacking - can discover the secrets of that Power.

Like most, if not all, collections of essays this is a book that is best read in bits and pieces. Reading this book from cover to cover would in all likelihood be quite exhausting. Moreover, the essays in this book are all of a rather high intellectual quality and require the reader to think along with the author, which is really only possible if they give themselves the time to absorb the information provided and the luxury of pondering it at their leisure.

What intrigued me most about this book is that while some of these essays appear to deal with subjects we completely take for granted and rarely give a second thought, Umberto Eco reflects on them from angles I had never considered and would never have considered if I hadn't read about them here.

Overall this book provided me with a fascinating, thought-provoking and at times eye-opening reading experience. While I can't say that every essay grabbed me to the same extent I can honestly state that they all interested me, even when - or maybe especially when - I wasn't quite sure exactly what it was I was reading.
