a little flat for me

I have really enjoyed this series thus far but this book left me a little disappointed. I adore Race, Cody and Kasey a lot.

Jesse I am just on the fence. I admire her, What she has been through she is pretty strong. I hate what happened in her life. There is just so much back and forth about her.

Will I read the next book in the series? Probably...

Another solid read

So here we are, with the fourth book in the Full Throttle series and Lisa Nowak has proven once again that cars, teens, and familial emotional angst, are topics that will capture your attention throughout the entire book.
Cody and Jess are two teens who are drawn together by chemistry, similar pasts and common interests but it's not enough to allow Jess to break down the walls she's built to protect herself until the worst happens. With her new family of friends supporting her, she struggles to reach deep down inside of herself to put to rest, once and for all, the guilt and haunting memories that are tearing her apart.
With Redline, I think Lisa has grown as an author right along with Cody and Jess, the teen characters in her novels. Her writing style is maturing and she's gotten very comfortable with the emotional situations and dialogues. Her humor is spot on perfect. Her proses have developed to a level of the seasoned author with passages like `The words twisted like a key inside me, moving old tumblers that have long been rusted solid. But I'd be an idiot to let her in.'
You won't be able to put this one down. I promise.
Perfect for teens and adults.

A Literary Who's Who Of Civil War Writers-Wow

As we approach the 150th Anniversary of the beginning of the American Civil War one would be hard pressed to find a subject related remotely to the war and its outcome that has not been covered by one or another Civil War buff. Needless to say the various major military and civilian figures have been covered ad nauseaum. Ditto for the main military strategies and their outcomes. Hardly a skirmish in some god forsaken hollow has been left untouched. And it goes on from there. The songs of both sides, the fashions of the day, the religions of the hour, the sacrifices on the home fronts and the financial credit ratings of both sides, just to pick some random examples, have all in their turn had their day in court. Lately, as the search for new material has gotten more doggedly elusive in the face of such scarcity factors such as the army morale, soldiers' morality and the meaning of life (or the afterlife) for both sides have come in for inspection. In short, there is no lack of information about almost any facet of the struggle. Yet, this book under review, published originally some twenty years ago, concerning the way the American literary set at the time or since then have, or have not, written the definitive sage of the conflict is well worth the read, and as a very good source for further exploration on the subject as well.

Professor Aaron has taken as his thesis the notion that although the American Civil War would seem to have been a natural subject for some literary figure to attain immortality by writing the its definitive saga. He argues, for several reasons, that this did not occur, or if did it was by someone like William Faulkner who was substantially removed from any serious direct link to the struggle. Fair enough, More than one author, and here I am thinking of Norman Mailer, has broken his literary teeth trying, unsuccessfully, to write the great American novel, Thus that the same frustration may have occurred over a titanic human struggle by those who fought in or had the conflict touch their lives even indirectly does not come as a surprise. What is interesting here is the professor's extensive overview of his subject and of the structure of his argument.

The professor has divided his book in several sections that reflect various applications of his overall theme. I will not go into detail here on each section but just say that a litany of the names that he evokes form a veritable who's who of the American literary scene, some very familiar (Faulkner, James, Twain) others lost in the mist of time (DeForest, Tourgee, Cable), over the 100 years after the war (he basically ends his work after looking at Faulkner's influence). I will, taking my hints from this book, spend more time in this space later going into more depth on many of these authors. For now though it is enough to summarize the sections.

Professor Aaron starts out by looking at the literary divide first- for or against one side or the other (or an off-hand indifference, as in the case of Melville). This tends toward a not unexpected divide between hot Northern "abolitionists" and Southern "fire-eaters". He goes on to look at Hawthorne, Whitman, and the above-mentioned Melville. He thereafter gives space, but literary short shrift to the "malingerers" those who sat out the war, one way or another. Here Henry James, Mark Twain and Henry Adams get their just dessert. No one expects a literary figure to be a fighter or brave, but it helps when the subject is war, especially a war that will define a new age (successfully or not).

Actual combatant writers come under fire as well. Most of these writers are not memorable and Ambrose Bierce is the only one I have even seen anthologized. The second hand warriors are best represented by Stephen Crane His "Red Badge Of Courage", required reading in high school certainly had the grit of the battlefield down but I agree with the professor that such a narrow scope is hardly the stuff of the "great" Civil War novel. Southern writers come in for some attention, especially the now well-known name of Sidney Lanier. Part of Professor Aaron argument is an assumption that while the South lost the war it "won" the literary battle. Certainly that was true until recently on the history front on the subjects of the fate of the slave under slavery and Radical Reconstruction. I am not as sure that this premise applies on this question.

Finally, the professor ends with a look at the Agrarians, a revisionist political/literary trend that took to defending the "old regime" in the South. The names Allen Tate, Robert Penn Warren (of "All The King's Men" fame) and John Crow Ransome are associated most closely with this endeavor. And of course at the tag end of that movement, although a literary force in his own right, William Faulkner who put the South, at least in fiction, back on the map. We have nothing common, as far as I can tell, politically or socially but, damn, he could write. As one can see a mere summary leads to many tempting ideas and precludes anything other than a summary to be followed up. In the meantime read this book. It is worth the time.

Well-researched & Detailed But Unevern and Very Tedious

This book is only incidentally about the Civil War per se and does not really contribute to knowledge about the war. The author reviews major writers from before the war until the 1920's and how they were influenced by the war and wrote about it. Their "philosophies" about the war are covered in fair detail and extensive quotations are made from the authors reviewed. The subject is very well researched by the author. Coverage of the various authors is, however, somewhat uneven. The reader cannot help but think that surely somebody could have written this study in a manner much less tedious to read.

About the Author
Britt Andreatta, PhD, is currently Chair of the Bachelor's Program at Antioch University, Santa Barbara. Previously, she served as Assistant Dean of Students and a faculty member at the University of California at Santa Barbara, where she worked for 20 years. She was responsible for designing and teaching all of the student success courses (Education 10, Education 20, and Education 118), as well as coordinating programming and mentoring efforts for all 4,000 freshmen students and 1,500 new transfer students. In addition, she coordinated UCSB's various leadership development programs. She serves as an educational consultant and diversity educator, providing training on a variety of issues to students, staff, and faculty at colleges and universities. Dr. Andreatta has an MA in Communication and a PhD in Education. Her dissertation was entitled "The Effects of Social and Academic Integration on the Retention of First-Year University Students," and she continues to explore issues related to student success. She has received numerous awards, including UCSB's prestigious Getman Service to Students Award, Professor of the Year, and the national Outstanding Experienced Professional by the American College Personnel Association (ACPA). Dr. Andreatta has created several exciting programs for parents of first-year students, including two workshops entitled "Your Student's First Year" and "Parents in Transition," both of which have been adapted to more than 250 colleges and universities in the United States, Canada, and Australia.

Joanie, Joanie, Joanie. How many times must you fall prey to the opposite sex? How many times must I feel like violently shaking you and telling you to run in the opposite direction?

Ms. Collins weaves a fun, fast-paced name-dropping narrative that isn't afraid to pull punches or name names. A great read for any fan of classic Hollywood or just a well-wrought story about coming of age, life and love under the harsh spotlight of fame. She is a survivor and a true star.

I had the paperback years ago and it had a bunch of photographs in it. The Kindle edition does not seem to have them at all. It also seems to be edited, as I remember things from the paper-back that are no longer in the kindle edition.

Will He Still Love You Tomorrow?

"Perhaps the strongest reason for this book is this: I feel in some small way that I have been a pioneer in the cause of women's sexual equality, and also in overcoming the age barrier that sets a cruel double standard for so many women in every walk of life." Joan Collins wrote this autobiography at the height of her Dynasty fame in 1983. I read it then at the age of fourteen, thinking it so incredibly bohemian, glamorous, and adventurous. It still is, and well worth reading because of Collins' sparkling prose and storytelling skills. The real underlying theme of this book, however, are the conflicts she (and all women, really) face when dealing with men. Now at age 44 myself, and having also been around the sex n' love block and aging to boot, my perspective on Collins' idea of herself as a pioneer on sexual equality and ageism has changed. Like all young girls, she considered her mother weak, clueless, and "filled with a host of misconceptions and superstitions that she drummed into me at an early age...A lot of these adages I deliberately set out to disprove as soon as I became aware of the male sex. But, there is a lingering residue of her teachings bouncing around in the subconcious somewhere that agrees with a lot of her philosophies: 'Men are no good.' 'They only want ONE THING from a woman.' 'He'll have NO RESPECT for you if you let him HAVE HIS WAY with you.' 'Nice girls don't let men TOUCH THEM unless they are married.' And so on, and so on..." About her mother, Collins' declares that "I was always stronger than she and it irritated me that she seemed to adore being a slave to my father." To show how wrong her mother was, and how much stronger than her mother she is, Collins instead chose to be a slave to many men. First husband Maxwell Reed drugged, raped, and beat her. He tried to be her pimp, blackmailed her, and sued her for alimony. Lover Sydney Chaplin lazed around the house and let Collins support him. Lover Arthur Loew was a garden-variety selfish jerk. Married George Englund made her his mistress and played her like a fish. Warren Beatty was an unknown who latched on to her, and then proceeded to boss her around about her career. Second husband Tony Newley was indifferent and dismissive, cheating on her and creating an insulting character based on her called Polyester Poontang, for one of his works of "genius." Third husband Ron Kass starts taking drugs on the sly, letting her fund their lifestyle, and publicly humiliating her when news of bills he left unpaid were made public. Whereas her repressed mother was married to, and supported by, one man her whole life, Collins states that "throughout most of my adult life, through three marriages and all my relationships with men, I have always bought my own clothes, furs, most of my jewelry, and paid my own bills." It seems like these jerks were only too willing to let her do just that. So, have things changed all that much now that women are more "free?" Not from my experience or that of my girlfriends. Men will still take free milk, and leave the cow with the check if it makes her happy. As far as ageism, Collins indulges in a little bit of it herself when describing the dirty old men who lusted after her. To be fair, these were sleazeball casting-couch predators, but nevertheless, describing it from a young girl's viewpoint, the disgust came from the offers being from men old enough to be her father. She unwittingly tells the truth: overt middle-aged sexuality is deeply unsettling. The 40s and 50s are mother- and father-figure time, not sex-object time. Her early championship of MILF-dom helped create today's legion of cougars. Younger men don't fear them, as Collins did her horny old men. Instead, they'll just sleep with them and move on. The older woman will be disgusted with herself for finding herself hurt and made a fool of for love and sex-again. Pioneer? For what? With all due repect, Joan Collins didn't change a thing. Mummy was right on the money.

Drawing upon primary documents and interviews, the text examines negotiation behaviour, and strategies and tools of statecraft, as well as analysing technical aspects of initiatives concerning the nuclear programme.

About the Author
CHRISTOPHE GALFARD holds a PhD. in theoretical physics from Cambridge University. He is coauthor with Stephen Hawking and his daughter on their first YA book, George's Secret Key to the Universe. In the past few years, he has given talks, and written a live show, about our universe attended by more than 130,000 people, of all ages and education background.

Good overview of known cosmology

If you are not up to speed on all things cosmological, this is a very good summary. For those better acquainted with the subject, however, it makes for a rather slow slog through familiar territory. Christophe's use of imagery in constantly growing and shrinking the reader gets a bit tedious as he traverses the macro and micro worlds. All in all, a good read for a relative novice.

A MUST READ FOR THE CURIOUS !

My goal in retirement, (retired physician) was to try to learn as much about the universe as possible before I returned my "borrowed" energy to the universe. I stumbled across this book at Barnes & Noble, and found it to be EXACTLY what I was searching for: a complete guide to current ideas on the universe from spacetime to quantum theory, all in a very understandable, nonmathematical, and even humorous, delightful read.
This was the first time since college physics that I was able to completely understand Einstein's equation e=mc squared. (The only equation in the book). A joy to read, and a please to ponder each chapter. Outstanding!!! A must read for anyone with curiosity about what is currently known about the universe.

Been on my nightstand for a month. A delightful and informative guided tour from the smallest to the biggest: string theory to beyond the observable universe. Not dry and no math. I'm gonna read it again.
