In my experience as a language teacher, what students often need is not more grammar exercises but practice. Many learners don't always have the opportunity to practice with native speakers and watching television series in German can be tricky, because they're often very fast-paced.�

Creative and fun

The story and illustrations are creative and fun......I find I can follow the story and expand my vocabulary. Not a substitute for a language class, but very good for someone like myself who has some working German and needs to practice reading in German.

I like the ways you can customize the story by choosing different paths...that is fun.

What a fun and interactive way to practice a new language. Klein has really built on his tort books to provide readers with even more fun here. Plus it's a fantasy setting, so double win. Loved it and can't wait for the sequel.

A little disappointing

After having read other books by Andre Klein, Mord am Morgen, Spielers Tod etc, I was rather disappointed. I would have preferred to read a story without the interaction...I felt like I was going round in circles sometimes. For me a continuous story broken down into small chapters would have been better. But that's probably just my personal preference.
Having said that this is a book to help people learn German and the genre in which it is written, was to some extent, a good introduction into this genre in German. Personally I would have enjoyed it more without the interaction.

Does he see his shadow, or doesn't he?

Level One readers learn about Groundhog Day, the importance of Phil's shadow and his prediction in this slim volume. The storyline is basic and includes all the pertinent facts. The illustrations are vivid; though Phil looks like a cat, a dog, or some other creature more often than he resembles a groundhog. Still, this is a good holiday introduction for the youngest readers.

The Kindergarten children loved the story of Groundhog Day. I loved reading it to them. They had never heard of Groundhog Day before. They went home and listened for news of the Holiday on tv. It was fun. The book arrived in a timely manner and was in demand by readers in my classroom to read by themselves after the teacher's read-aloud. Great book and easy to read. Very informative, too. It should be in all K-1 classrooms.

Great and important resource for mechanical engineers and product designers. Very approachable material with fantastic graphs - just what a person who is a visual thinker can really appreciate, which probably describes 98% of us product designers! And Kara Johnson is one of the nicest people you could ever meet. Keep up the good work at IDEO, Kara!

decent, but no answers to exercises

I like the writing in this book; it is easy to read and the author avoids complicated wording and doesn't use too much jargon at once.
However, the lack of answers to the exercises in the book is a huge problem, as there are few examples per concept, and many times you're left hanging without a firm grasp of the section. This is a shame, as many of the exercises are unique and really encourage a full understanding of the material.

Beginning Python coders: consider looking elsewhere

I found this to be, unfortunately, a really poor choice for learning Python, especially as a first language. Why? Because the authors seem more obsessed with the "science" of computer science and less with teaching a programming langugage. Most books on coding focus on introducing a series of new programming topics--loops and decision trees in one chapter, functions in another--and then use examples mainly to back up what has just been learned. This book takes an opposite approach.The chapters cover a numblingly wide variety of topics that force you to absorb what is often obscure material, while all too frequently leaving the language concepts in the background. Chapter 2, for example, discusses all sorts of ways to determine the value of pi (wouldn't one have been enough, especially for such an early chapter?) Chapter 3 talks about classical crytopgraphy (Vignere ciphers, anyone)? I've rarely seen an intro to programming book that deals with such mathematics as standard deviation and correlation coefficients. Other chapters revolve around data mining and image processing. Interesting stuff...for individual upper-level courses, maybe. Meanwhile, the actual job of learing Python remains almost an afterthought. Examples? Strings aren't discussed until p. 83. How to accept input from users has to wait until p. 99, and gets short shrift thereafter. Do we really need to tackle dozens of infobits (such as how the value of pi was arrived at 2,000 years ago), while sticking almost religiously to the command line, when instead we could be spending precious textbook time learning real-world stuff like how to use IDEs and do program debugging? If the authors want to teach by example--never a bad idea--why not focus on a single (preferably useful) topic, and then build on that topic with the programming knowledge gained in each chapter until, by the end of the book, the reader has at written, instead of dozens of short modules that are loosely-connected at best, one long-form program that covers truly useful things such as parsing user input for errors and exception handling? Sorry--in my opinion this distracting, digressive book makes learning Python significantly harder than it needs to be.

Author seems like a smart and creative thinker, but covers ridiculous stuff.

It starts off very inspiring with the Python turtles. Very rewarding for anyone who has taken a programming class and thought it was too non-practical. The turtles are really fun.

Then the author loses his mind and starts talking about Archimedes math, PI, and Cryptology. He asks questions at the end of chapter he never covered in the readings, which is frustrating.

IMO this book is terrible for a class book, but I am going through it on my own jumping over the weird stuff and picking out the standard programming information like loops etc...

I think the Author seems like he would be a cool guy to get a beer with but needs to refocus this book to the beginner. Clean up the abstract stuff and stick to simple examples for this book. Then write a second book with the weird math references.

education, sensitive to the means of inculcating the
personal responsibility necessary for living in a free
society.”

Turnbull was the mentor of Thomas Reid, but his
influence was not confined to Scotland. Benjamin
Franklin, in drafting his Proposals Relating to the
Education of Youth in Pensilvania, drew generously
from Observations.

George Turnbull (1698–1748) belongs to the founding figures in the Scottish Enlightenment. Finding their
native Calvinism repressive, they sought a rational religion closely associated with their new
science of human nature, supportive of tolerance, and compatible with classical ideals.

This book is exactly what I needed for my advanced stats class. Wonderful! In a perfect world I could afford all of there green books, but there are waay too many. But they are lightweight and easy to use.

This benchmark study concludes with a careful examination of the famous sentence of Leviticus 17.11 that 'blood makes atonement' (_kipper_) and explains how, in the Priestly ideology, blood sacrifice was able to accomplish both ransom and purification.

Great Monograph

This is a very fine monograph--a must for any serious study of Leviticus. Sklar did this work under Gordon Wenham and the influence is clear throughout, but he certainly advances some of the key concepts well beyond Wenham's justly famous work. The issues of sin and impurity, and their pairing acts of sacrifice and atonement, sit at the heart of Leviticus both as a text and cultural artifact. And Sklar puts forward a clear and persuasive account of their place in the priestly literature and cultural setting.

I am a preacher (ex-academic) and highly recommend this work to preachers, though the price may seem rather prohibitive. It will take you to the heart of the great book of Leviticus and provide more than sufficient fodder for sermons and theology. I am told that Sklar will soon be publishing the Leviticus commentary in the popular Tyndale series. That is certain to be a must-buy.

46 Dr. Seuss derived Designs with some binding issues – printed on both sides of the page

[[VIDEOID:bdc44a864b44ffe68432fbde2762dd24]]I enjoyed Dr. Seuss as a child and have since read them to my children and their children. I was looking forward to receiving my new coloring book with artwork from the Dr. Seuss books. The book is nicely done but is missing some of my favorites (especially “Green Eggs and Ham”.) There are a good number of designs in the book and there are so many books to choose from that it almost seemed a given that many would not be included.

The designs are detailed but not too intricate. Many of the designs spread across two pages and parts of the design are lost in the binding area. In my copy, the pages line up fairly well. What is a problem is that the binding is a hybrid of glue and sewn. It has many stitches and the glue is heavier on certain pages. Those pages are difficult to lay flat for coloring. While there are not many of those pages, the ones that have the issue will be very difficult to color as even when I break the binding, I have to struggled to get my very sharp pencil point into the coloring elements. For this issue, I dropped my review to four star.

The designs are derived from Dr. Seuss books rather than exact duplicates. This is what I experienced while coloring in the book and testing my coloring medium on the paper:

Printed on both sides of the page

Paper is white, medium weight, fairly smooth and non-perforated

Hybrid glue/sewn binding that is difficult to open to lay flat

Designs reach into the binding area/spine

Many designs spread across two pages and important elements are divided onto both pages

Alcohol-based markers bleed through the page. These will leak through and mar the designs on the reverse of the page.

Water-based markers and India ink pens do not bleed through but do leave shadows on the back of the page. These will be noticeable on the designs that are on the reverse of your working page.

Gel pens do not leak through but require additional drying time.

Colored pencils work well with the paper. Though it is smooth to the touch, it still has enough tooth to grab pigment. I tested both boil and wax-based pencils and got good results from layering the same color, multiple colors, and blending with a blending stick.

SUUUUEEEEESSSSSSS & colouring!!!! Hit & Miss!

I have to say that I am actually disappointed with this book.
That makes me truly sad to say that actually!!
I have loved Dr Suess since I was just a wee little one!

He is still my favorite to this day because of the impact his books have had in my life, my children's lives and how he has touched the lives of SO many others. So when I found out that there was an official Suess adult colouring book, I was VERY happy!!
So when the sale price came along......I HAD TO HAVE IT!!!

It came a few days ago and I want to love it! I REEEEAAALLLYYY do! I am sad to say that, in my humble opinion, it could be much better and more of the well known characters in it. Don't get me wrong, there are about half the book, good pages that I will color eventually. The others are either nothing I like, drawn too thick, or just a pattern of the same thing (like a filler type page).

So the technical specs are that it's a large square (10"). They are double sided printed, white, thicker pages. In my experiences with similar books you won't want to use very wet mediums like alcohol markers or paints because of bleeding through (unless you didn't want to color the opposite side) and recommend using card stock or a few sheets of paper as a buffer for any medium you choose.

I'm sure there are others who have a flip through of this book by now so you can judge for yourself if you want it. I will be keeping it because the price was good and I still love my Suess!!!
