This book may have been useful at one point. However, with more recent updates to the play framework it has become obsolete. The first example project they have you work on fails to compile.

Incompatible with Latest Play 2 Releases

Although the book says it "Covers Play 2", the latest versions of the Play framework are incompatible with even the simplest examples in Chapter 2 of this book. While it may be possible to adapt the code so that it could work, that's above what is expected of students from teaching material.

Finally a book to "Play" with Scala

First of all the table of contents. Well organized, you get immediately what will be your learning paths.
The book is divided into 3 main parts: Getting Started, Core Functionality and Advanced Topics.

Part 1 - Getting Started
A really nice overview about how Play works, its internals and how you can get ready to start your Play server.
Some good HTTP key points which are a nice recap to start developing you first and very easy web-application.
Remember Play is not just a framework, it is a full-stack project. It gives you a server and a bunch of API to work with.

Part 2 - Core Functionality
From here on the book guides you in building a complete web-application that deals with input validation, data binding, template engine and all that comes with MVC.
MVC, the "C" part it is very well done, whilst the "V" part is what I liked most. It's about Play high-performance template engine a very powerful "toy" for the user-interface to get things done easily, quickly and elegant. It uses LESS and CoffeeScript; it says all.
In this part the book also covers the persistence layer, first with Anorm and then with Squeryl modules.

Part 3 - Advanced Topics
This last part covers how to build a SinglePageApplication with JSON and template engine.
It also shows you how to use the WebService API, handle cache results and work with WebSockets.

What I like most about the book is its step by step approach to learning about Play internals with Scala code.
A lots of Scala code.

For people like me, whom use to work with Java, this book is what you need to get started with Scala.
I really recommend this book for anyone, beginners and expert.
I would suggest the author to change book's title to "Scala no fear, just Play".

Rewards faithful readers with an even deeper understanding of Sanderson's creations

Weighing in at 672 pages, Brandon Sanderson's first short fiction collection not only pulls together various short stories and novellas from across his Cosmere, but organizes them by Shardworlds, complete with essays and illustrations on each. Arcanum Unbounded is a collection that would no doubt be daunting to a new reader, but which rewards the faithful with an even deeper understanding of his creations.

The collection opens with a pair of stories set in the world of Elantris, with “The Emperor's Soul” serving as a standalone tale, and “The Hope of Elantris” taking place following the original novel. Soul was the one story in the collection I had read before, and it was just as fascinating the second time around. As for Hope, it will have to wait until I read the source material, since it contains major spoilers.

Not surprisingly for his longest series to date, Mistborn gets three entries here. “The Eleventh Metal” was a pleasant surprise, being a prequel to the series with my favorite character, Kelsier. As odd as it was to see him so early in his career, it was also interesting to get some more insights into his tortured past. “Allomancer Jak and the Pits of Eltania, Episodes 28 through 30” was, by far, the most entertaining story in the collection. Written as a pulp adventure tale, what really makes it work is all the footnotes from the fictional editor who is forced to publish such nonsense. “Mistborn: Secret History” brings us back to Kelsier, following the events of the first Mistborn novel. It was an interesting story, with some entertaining moments, but I've never been a fan of stripping a character of his powers and taking him out of his element.

“White Sand" was a fascinating treat, offering up a sample of the graphic novel on which it's based (which is awesome all on its own), and then pairing it with the short story from which it originated. "Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell” is another standalone story set in its own world, and probably the darkest piece in the collection. It's a story of haunted forests, human cruelty, painful secrets, and the undying thirst for revenge. As far as the new material here is concerned, this was probably my favorite. Ironically, the next entry - “Sixth of Dusk” - was the only story that didn't work for me. I can't put my finger on what was wrong with it, but the story just never grabbed me.

The self-professed crown jewel of the collection, "Edgedancer," is an all-new Stormlight Archive novella that I am pleased to say was everything I was looking for. It's a great story that gives us a peek at another part of the world, and which looks at the magic of the world from a younger, less experienced perspective. It's a story that blends sorrow, awe, and humor in equal measure, revisiting the character of Lift, who first appeared in Words of Radiance.

Even if you've read some of the material before, the packaging of Arcanum Unbounded makes it a must read. Each section of the book has an illustration of the solar system in which it takes place, with the character of Khriss (who has written the Ars Arcanum at the end of each novel) providing a short essay on the world. Each story gets an illustration to introduce it, along with a Postscript from Sanderson, explaining how it fits into the Cosmere, why it's important, and how it came about. While it's not a good place to start for new readers, it's definitely a treat for fans.

Sanderson Delivers!

Sanderson is best known for writing HUGE fantasy novels. Brandon Sanderson is a born winner. It seems everything he tries his hand at is a home run! That is the case with this collection of shorts. I had already read every entry here with the exception of the new Stormlight Archive story Edgedancer. Stormlight is already my favorite series running right now. Will just say I have read the current books a couple of times. :)

Edgedancer is great. It runs 40 thousand words. It is about roughly 10 the length of one of the main novels. The main character of it is Lift, who you will have met in one of the interludes of Words of Radiance. Her story here serves many purposes. First and foremost, it is just a heck of a lot of fun. Next it expands on the world that this series takes place on. Last it is a good primer for book 3. Helping curb my appetite for Oathbringer along was worth the price of admission. If you liked Lift's awesomeness in WoR then rest assured this will not disappoint.

That isn't the only reason to buy this book. The other stories contained are incredible. My personal favorite is The Emporer's Soul. It is one of my favorite pieces of fiction of all time!

Worth it if you don't already own the stories; one new story, others are reprints

I adore Brandon Sanderson and Cosmere, so I pre-ordered this book sight unseen. I am disappointed that it’s basically reprints of stories and novellas that I had already purchased separately.

If you don't own them already, this book is totally worth buying. The stories are excellent, especially The Emperor's Soul, which is one of my favorites. I've included a list of the contents lower in this review.

As for me, no matter how much I love Sanderson's work, $16 to gain one new story was too steep, so I returned it. I don't care for authors repackaging previously published works without much extra to make the new collection worth it. It just lends itself to people like me who snap it up thinking that it's something new. It also feels a bit manipulative, counting on completionists to buy it for that one story that they lack. I truly anticipate Sanderson's books, but this one just wasn't it.

I glanced at the table of contents and saw I owned most of the contents, but didn't look at the individual chapters closely enough to see if the essays contained the same info as Mistborn: Secret History. Right now I'm trying Sanderson’s Alcatraz books.

Showing the value of individuals

I am actually the wife of the person named here . I am a children's librarian and read this storyto the children when it snows. It is one of my favorite picture books; the children enjoy it very much. The story is really quite philosophical--it shows the significance of a tiny snowflake who would otherwise be unnoticed. In fact ,the snowflake becomes the twinkle in the eye of the snowman. The illustrations are colorful, and are easy for very young children to "see." I love this story.

Twinkle, twinkle little snowflake- good things can happen

Students enjoyed the colorful illustrations. The story has a good message- dream big, and it may happen.... endearing story about the twinkle in someone's eye. Reinforces six sides to snowflakes, but age appropriate for young children. Well done

Slightly entertaining

I bought this without seeing it first and was disappointed. The story is about a snowflake who gets to ice skate (the adventure). I had hoped for something more informational on snowflakes, and I also thought the interaction with the 'mean' snowflake to be silly and unnecessary.
