About the Author
Maurice Obstfeld is the Class of 1958 Professor of Economics at the University of California, Berkeley. His interests are in international finance and macroeconomics, areas in which he has published numerous research articles. Professor Obstfeld received his Ph.D. from MIT and later taught at Columbia, the University of Pennsylvania, and Harvard before moving to Berkeley. He has served as a consultant for the IMF, World Bank, European Commission, and several central banks. With Kenneth Rogoff, he is the author of Foundations of International Macroeconomics (1996). He is also the author, together with Paul Krugman, of International Economics: Theory and Policy, which has been translated into several foreign languages. He is a Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research, a Research Fellow of the Centre for Economic Policy Research (London), and a Fellow of the Econometric Society.

It's entertaining to realize how incompatible Krugman's column is with his textbook instruction

This book does a pretty good job of explaining international economic concepts. What's really interesting is to read this textbook and realize how incompatible Paul Krugman's NYT column is with his own teachings.

Comprehensive but Convoluted

This is not a self-study book. Although it has some "friendly" figures and examples, it is not concise and this tends to confuse students. Sometimes it does not explain models from the simple to complex, and it has very long sentences that may confuse the reader. Moreover, the order of ideas explained in each chapter is not always clear, and the reader has to find out by himself what is the relevance and connection between those ideas. It is important to note that many classmates shared my opinion, and some friends who used the international edition (outside the U.S.) also thought that the book was confusing and convoluted.

On the other hand, if you have a teacher this book may be useful. It also has a very comprehensive, interesting and useful content. I would just suggest to have another source (teacher, textbook, online material) to complement Krugman and Melitz' book.

Sensitive, helpful book on how to repair broken relationships

I very much enjoyed this book and found it helpful. It provides a roadmap of suggestions on how to repair and move forward when a relationship stumbles. I loved the reflections at the end of each chapter. I strongly recommend this book when a relationship is struggling with trauma and lost love.

Another amazing book from Randi Gunther that will help save your relationship!

Already having read Randi Gunther's first book, "Relationship Saboteurs", we pre-ordered "When Love Stumbles" the moment it was available. Everyone I know that has read "Relationship Saboteurs," a book that describes the ten major destructive behaviors that can ruin relationships, has found they have at least 1/10 behaviors. After such an eye-opening and revealing experience, I wanted a book that would help me use my newfound self-awareness and apply it to the specific, everyday problems all couples face. "When Love Stumbles" does just that. If you're feeling like you've lost that special spark, like you and your partner hurt each other unnecessarily, like you need to make your relationship a priority again, recommit to being a team, or remap your life together, this book helps you and your partner openly share why you fell in love at the start, what caused that love to fade, and what you can do to get it back. I highly recommend it!

Repetitive but Excellent help for your relationship

Negatives first. I think the hardest thing that When Love Stumbles has to compete with is Randi's last book, Relationship Saboteurs: Overcoming the Ten Behaviors That Undermine Love. I have to say that I liked Relationship Saboteurs better. While both are somewhat repetitive to let you jump in at any point that suits you best, I felt it much more in this book. I also may just prefer to focus on the person, as the last book does, instead of the relationship as this one does. When Love Stumbles focuses much more on the relationship troubles rather than on the troubles of the people in the relationship, as such this book will probably be more helpful if you feel that the problem is in how you interact rather than with either of you. This does mean this book probably won't do much of anything for you if the both of you aren't doing it together. I also had a hard time wrapping my head around the Quick Check Meters, which exist in each chapter to grade yourselves on the problem. With a few exceptions in the second half, the numbers didn't make very good sense to me, I had to go back and look over the wording of the grades after each question which made it feel very unintuitive. Having read the whole book I also have to question the order a little but that is really just a quibble.

Having said all that, the basic premise and exercises of the book are excellent and did get me thinking quite a bit. It seems to me that reading chapter 1, 2, then skipping all the way to chapter 11, and then reading the chapter on your specific problem would be the most helpful. At the risk of maybe accidentally revealing too much about myself, I though chapters 6-8 stood above the rest as universally applicable and just helpful to anybody, so those are probably worth skimming even if those three aren't your problem. Despite my negatives being longer, I really did feel this was an excellent book, and the basic six step healing plan seems worth the time to invest in reading even if you aren't having problems just so you have the skill under your belt.

STEPHEN PARRY has extensive experience in the areas of customer service strategy, proposition development, organisational development, business process alignment, technology introduction, change and turnaround management. Over the last nine years he has developed an innovative approach to rapidly transforming and managing service centre operations called Sense and Respond, which combines the most beneficial elements of System Thinking, Lean Service and Transformational Leadership. This approach was adopted by Fujitsu who appointed Stephen as Head of Corporate Services. In 2001 he was awarded both the European Call Centre of the Year award for Innovation and Creativity and the European Call Centre of the Year award for best people development programme. He regularly lectures at leading Business Schools including Cambridge-MIT Institute, Aston Business School and Cranfield School of Management.

SUE BARLOW has worked in the retail and distribution industry and the IT Infrastructure Services business. Her expertise is in the field of Strategic Consultancy, specialising in organisational transformation and development across all business sectors. She co-developed the leading approach called Sense and Respond which was awarded the Best Customer Service Strategy award 2003 in the National UK Business Awards and also received the 2001 European Call Centre of the Year award for Innovation and Creativity and the Best People Development Programme. She is an influential leader in the field of organisational development and change management and is a member of IMD in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Compelling case for the relevance of Lean Services

As a software developer and agile coach, I found this book compelling and eye opening. The concepts of CORE (Creation, Opportunity, Reactive, External) demand and getting customer data that focuses on what is really relevant to not just what will satisfy the customer, but what will lead to customer success (customer purpose), gives much more helpful direction in guiding an overall lean transformation. All companies eventually must deliver a service to the customer, so lean services thinking is relevant to all businesses. And given the frequent focus on metrics and KPI's in large companies (Key Performance Indicators), the authors provide clear guidance how to use metrics that give a holistic picture rather than provide fuel for wasteful actions in siloed departments.

My only complaint about the book is that it really is too short. There are exciting hints about the importance of systems theory, coaching and mentoring, and transformational leadership, but clearly 150 pages did not leave enough space to go in more depth. It was exciting to read about how to assist an organization to face up to real customer data, look at the waste, and make changes that would have been considered "impossible" in the normal day to day political reality of many organizations. I would have loved to have heard more about this.

I'll also say that it does help to have some awareness of lean and agile concepts before diving into this book, though it's not at all necessary - it does help to digest and understand why the information is so valuable.

Disappointing

The core message of "Sense and Respond" is that we should redesign our business processes to really focus on what the customer values. This is not a particularly new message - "voice of the customer" is a key theme in lean management - but it is a message worth exploring in depth. How do we achieve this goal ? Unfortunately, to my mind, this book doesn't answer this question. There is a diagram on page 8 which sums up the four areas for creating such customer focus. From memory these include trained, well paid and motivated staff dealing with customers and empowered to solve their problems; frequent improvement activity involving all levels; leadership development to bring about this culture change; and so on. The book then looks at each of these areas, but not in particular depth. Instead the comments made seem bland and generalised. The sections on staff development, for example, are so basic that they provide no real guidance at all. At $45 for 150 pages this makes the book expensive for such little worthwhile content. In addition the writing style is dull and uninvolving. Start your quest for customer purpose elsewhere !

Intelligent approach about customer value and thinking systems

An absolutely intelligent book about customer value and creating thinking systems!

Through these very difficult economic times, many organizations are throwing around buzz words of being "lean" or adopting "lean" methods. Assumptions are made if you offshore your "waste" you are saving costs. This is absolutely wrong headed thinking. Off shoring waste is not cost savings.

The questions to start to ask are; why do you have the waste in the first place? Who is your customer? What do your customers want? Why do customers want what they want? Why is it important to know the need behind your customer's demand?

The book "Sense and Respond - The Journey to Customer Purpose" can provide the insight to those questions. This book is an absolute must have for any organization which is serious about being a sustainable, relevant, and valued organization in the 21st century, and which can potentially become a leader in transforming an industry.

If your organization is serious about saving money, saving talent, unlocking the potential within the talent and most importantly holding onto and growing your customer relationships towards developing customer partnerships. It's absolutely necessary to understand that "lean" is not about tools, laying off employees or off-shoring. It is about respecting people.

Sense and Respond is based upon "Lean Principles". If you are looking for lean tools, this is not your book. This book's approach starts with the thinking. The underlying theme throughout the book is that Sense and Respond is about designing thinking systems, not systems thinking.

This book will provide the insight of powerful connection of being customer-centric and designing thinking systems, and how this can lead your organization to become a transformational leader of any given industry.

Businesses unto themselves are not successful, it's what makes them successful is the only thing that matters. What make organizations successful are customers. It is the customers who are at the heart of every organization.

The Sense and Respond approach will lay out a very compelling perspective why it is no longer sustainable for organizations to focus on internal functional goals and siloed business units. It explains why customer-centric end to end delivery works.

This book is also about showing that everyone in the organization can be a leader of transformation. Transformation is what makes an organization innovative not just in terms of "technology" but also in terms of problem solving, and becoming the trusted advisor your customer has been wanting.

This book is very deep in terms of content. There are no wasted words. Every sentence is significant and stimulates your thinking on how your organization can realistically change its approach.

On a lighter note, I have adopted the approach to put colored tabs on passages which are significant. I realized this approach does not work with this book, because every passage is significant. I am not one who highlights the entire book in fact, was my friends wanted to buy the textbooks I used, because I only highlighted the important points.

There are three different case studies which provide the evidence supporting the Sense and Respond does work.

The purpose of this review is not to convince you, but to let you find out for yourself.

Michael Hanania Benklifa manages millions of dollars worth of condor trades every month for private investors through his firm, Othello Consulting. He formerly served as a Financial Advisor for UBS and as an M&A Analyst for several large pharmaceutical companies. A great strategy if you have time to monitor every day

Most books on options try to be all things to all people by starting off with a basic education in options and then proceeding to give the basics on many different trades. This book drills deeply into a strategy using condors that is largely rules-based and that gives you good methods for adjusting the trade and preserving capital if the trade isn't working out as planned. It is a fully detailed strategy for profitable condors.

While the book does spend some time on options basics, most of the focus in this area is on "the Greeks." The book rapidly moves into how to put on the trade, when to put on the trade, how much credit you should get for it, when to get out of the trade and how to adjust the trade if necessary. It reminds you that having a plan for exiting a trade is often as important as having a plan for making the trade to begin with.

I waited until I put on a few trades with this approach to see if my opinions would change. So far, my trades using this approach have worked out well.

If I had one minor complaint with the book it is that it should be a little more forceful in its admonitions that, in a single position, you are generally risking $2100 to $2200 to have a maximum profit $300-$400, assuming the position were held until it was closed. Since you're not holding until the close, your typical upside in the trade is more like $100-$150. The point is, if the market moves against you quickly with this trade, you can lose your shirt very quickly. That is a low probability event and the author shows how to mitigate these risks, but that doesn't change the fact that you may occasionally suffer a devastating loss (like with a quick drop in the market and a surge in volatility, both of which can work against you simultaneously). Accordingly, if you can't pay careful attention to the market to manage the position, this would not be the book for you.

Take a ride on a condor!

The iron condor is basically an option trade that involves selling and buying two out-of-the money calls and two out-of-the money puts in the same month for one stock or index. Actually, you are really putting on two vertical spreads, one on each side of the current price of the stock or index.

The author favors trading the SPX, RUT, and NDX mainly for reasons of liquidity and the fact that as European-style options you do not have to worry about exercise prior to expiration date. Interestingly, the back cover stresses the ability to earn consistent returns very month with "surprisingly modest risk," but the author himself states early in the book that this should not be considered to be an income strategy and then he goes on to stress that there are a lot of risks with this strategy. In fact as he explains, those risks make it imperative that the trader keep a watchful eye on both "wings" of the condor so that adjustments can be made as needed. This is definitely not one of those trades that you can put on and then just check every week or so.

Although many traders who use spreads typically like to leave their trades on for as long as possible in the hopes of keeping most, if not all of the amounts that they were credited when the trade was opening, this author actually recommends against holding trades open for this long. He definitely is more in favor of going for singles rather than home runs. For example, he claims that "the exit strategy that works best is to give back almost all of the credit. If you take in an initial 16% credit and keep only 3%, 4% or 5%, you're giving back most of the potential profits. How many trades have you made that can consistently make profits of 3% in a few days regardless of the direction of the market?" I see his point, but if you are someone who has only previously traded options from the long side, be prepared to change your way of thinking.

Those who have been involved in other types of spreads may already be familiar with much of the material found in the book, but those who have not been involved in selling options or in spread trading of any type will find this book interesting. If you read the book and decide that you're really not that interested in this particular strategy or type of trading, you won't have to waste much of your time since the book can be finished in one sitting.

High praise!

I'll give this book on options trading high praise. It's practical, and I have already begun putting the writer's trading philosophy to the test in the markets. Benklifa describes a philosophy and a set of rules or guidelines towards trading iron condors that is quite different from anything I had heard about previously. As I was reading, it kept occurring to me, "this can work..." which was really exciting. An iron condor is a non-directional trade seeking to make money either from a drop in volatility or from a lack of trend, or both. Yet the writer's trading philosophy can be implemented using directional vertical spreads also. For example, a trader could simply sell an out of the money vertical in the direction that the underlying is not expected to move. The "trading journal" in chapter 3 was especially valuable as it fleshed out the writer's thinking as he put trades on and adjusted them. The only part of the book that seemed to deserve more discussion was on adjustment methods. One method that was discussed towards the end of Chapter 3 was rolling farther out, the wing of the condor that is getting too close for comfort as shown by the deltas. However this will usually cost a debit to make the roll, thus reducing the credit on the whole trade, perhaps reducing the credit significantly. One adjustment that was not discussed in the text would be to follow this up by selling another wing in the "safe" direction. Although this adds more risk to the overall trade, it pulls in a credit, and possibly makes the rolling of one wing, farther out, less expensive. Also, there are other adjustments that are not covered in the text. However this book is astoundingly useful and practical. Five stars, and well deserved!

Sweet alien warriors and fiesty females whats not to love!

I love this series, great characters and solid world building. The Denynso of Uoria are being attacked by the Klimnu and through each book you discover more of the powers that the Kilmnu possess and what or who they are after. The Denynso King and Queen have opened there home world to a select few through a university program. Those selected will stay on Uoria for 6 months. Some of the Denynso warriors want nothing more than to find a female to bond with, to love and protect. The only problem with that is the females they bond with are human and are not the type to be coddled, they will stand next to their males not behind them. In each bonding there are struggles that will they will fight to overcome and feelings that they try to deny. I received an ARC for an honest review.

Uoria Mates Complete Series(Books 1-10) by Ruth Anne Scott

This is a wonderful bundle of alien stories. We meet alien royalty, their warriors and their chosen women. Each one of these individual stories has a awesome storyline and you can't help but fall in love with their characters. I loved every single one of these stories for various reasons. Definitely worth the read. Loved them!

are you kidding me?! LOVED it! and loved it so much i just bought the UORIA mates II. and the author even wrote to me letting me know she how she came up with the idea. wow love the personal info and again, I LOVED THIS SERIES!!!! lol gimme some Denynos warrior males-and maybe have a few with twins and finding their mate on earth. or maybe the birth of twins or triplets?
