Seizing the High Ground

This book covers the 1863 battles in the Western Theater which took place in Tennessee during the second half of the year. Following the fall of Vicksburg the North's war effort switches to central and eastern Tennessee (the east was very pro-Union). At first this campaign was under the command of General Rosecrans, who pushed General Bragg's Confederates away from Murfreesboro and didn't stop until reaching the mountains around Chattanooga. A defeat at Chickamauga saw the Federals repulsed and forced back to Chattanooga... a small city which was soon virtually cut off from its supply lines. General Grant was given the command, established a new supply line (the "cracker line") and with his best lieutenant General Sherman he was soon poised to push the Confederates off the formidable Lookout Mountain and Missionary Ridge.
Well-illustrated with period photos, photos of relevent artifacts, maps and original artwork. The book could have used better maps of the "movements to contact" but still very well written and entertaining. Includes sidebars on the rough country around Chattanooga, paintings of the battles by James Walker, photo portraits staged at Lookout Mountain and repeating rifles.
