About the Author
During the 30 years that Everett Walsh worked as an undercover detective, he witnessed far too many crime scenes where people transformed into monsters, ravaging and killing their victims by the most heinous methods. In 2015 Everett took early retirement to follow his passion: writing. This is his first unsolved murder novella, containing ten stories of 33+ victims, some who suffered the most hideous deaths that most human minds can’t even conceive.

True Crimes With Some Safety Tips
By Barb C.
Murders Still Loose is a collection of true murders that have not been solved to date. This could have been a book that you have read before but the author has made the stories very interesting with information I have not seen before.

Additionally, the author provides advice without being preachy about how things could have gone differently in each case if people would have been more aware and careful in there action. I found this to be interesting and well though out.

There are a total of ten cases that cover time periods from the late 1800s to the 2000s. I find the older stories, and there are plenty, to be interesting because in many cases I am not familiar with them. This book has some well know cases like Natalie Holloway and the Benders and some lesser known though interesting cases like Ken Mex Rex McElroy and the Keddie murders.

If you are looking for a true crime book that is written a bit differently, in a positive way, then I would check this book out.

Interesting and useful at the same time
By Tomislav
Within this book, Everett Walsh provides us with ten enthralling stories of unsolved cases. They are all quite varied - they span a few centuries, have different victims and overall bring many distinct cases to the table. I personally liked the format of this book. It has a norm for how the cases are presented and it doesn’t stray away from it. We are always introduced properly into the case, given background information and then the author continues to follow the case with detail. At the end of the cases, there are also “What we learnt” reminders that not only remind us of mistakes we or our close ones should avoid making, but also provide help with sorting out the story in our heads for all who are interested in the stories themselves.

“Murderers Still Loose: With Important Life and Safety Lessons” is a worthy read, in my opinion, so I strongly suggest it to anyone in search for stories like this or tips to leading a safer life.

Chief Culture Officer: How to Create a Living, Breathing Corporation, by Grant McCracken

Levi-Strauss, the jeans and apparel maker, missed out on the hip-hop trend. They didn’t realize that those kids in baggy jeans represented a whole new—and lucrative—market opportunity, one they could have seen coming if they had but been paying attention to the shape of American culture.

Levi Strauss isn’t alone. Too many corporations outsource their understanding of culture to trend hunters, cool watchers, marketing experts, consulting firms, and, sometimes, teenage interns. The cost to Levi-Strauss was a billion dollars. The cost to the rest of corporate America is immeasurable.

The lesson? The American corporation needs a new professional. It needs a Chief Culture Officer.

Grant McCracken, an anthropologist who now trains some of the world’s biggest companies and consulting firms, argues that the CCO would keep a finger on the pulse of contemporary cultural trends—from sneakers to slow food to preppies—while developing a systematic understanding of the deep waves of culture in America and the world. The CCO’s professionalism would allow the corporation to see coming changes, even when they only exist as the weakest of signals.

Delightfully authoritative, trenchantly on point, bursting with insight and character, Chief Culture Officer is sure to expand your horizons—and your business.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. McCracken (Flock and Flow), a research affiliate at Convergence Culture Consortium at MIT, argues that every company needs a chief cultural officer to anticipate cultural trends rather than passively waiting and reacting. CCOs should have the ability to process massive amounts of data and spot crucial developments among an array of possibilities; they will be able to see the future coming, no matter which industry they serve, and create value for shareholders, move product, create profit and increase the bottom line. McCracken provides an impressive list of individuals deeply connected and in tune with the zeitgeist including Steve Jobs, A.G. Lafley, Mary Minnick, Joss Whedon and Johnny Depp—who fought Disney in order to create a campy male lead in the Pirates of the Caribbean movie—as well as such corporations as Starbucks and Nike that have refashioned culture. McCracken's case is persuasive, and his book, peppered with pop culture references and enlivened by his restlessly inquisitive nature (and ability to strike up conversation with just about anyone), makes for enlightening and entertaining reading. Create Your Own Economy
“I have deep admiration and respect for Grant McCracken, a nimble thinker who combines a mastery of marketing, culture, anthropology, and modern business practice. Chief Culture Officer has many lessons for anyone interested in understanding how to run a successful business in the early 21st century. It will prove one of the most stimulating books of the year.”

Philip Kotler, author of Chaotics: The Business of Managing and Marketing in the Age of Turbulence
“Marketing gets failing grades when it comes to understanding and using culture. In Chief Culture Officer—a delectable cultural soup that is sure to stir your taste buds—Grant McCracken makes a compelling case that culture will be marketing’s next silver bullet. I whole-heartedly endorse his call for bringing culture-thinking into the company.”

Ben Casnocha, author of My Start-Up Life: What a (Very) Young CEO Learned on His Journey through Silicon Valley
“This is a marvel of a business book: highly entertaining, original, and provocative. Entrepreneurs who want to understand their customers, target market, and the cultural dynamics that shape the business world—which is to say all entrepreneurs—need to read it.”

Seth Godin, author of Tribes & Purple Cow
“The title of this book is a lie. It's not merely for companies that decide they need a Chief Culture Officer, or even just for those who aspire to that job. It's for you. Right now. If your job involves marketing, inventing, selling or simply investing in companies that make stuff, this book is a must read.”

John Deighton, Brierley Professor of Business Administration, Harvard Business School
“For those who are open to its thrall, Chief Culture Officer will change the trajectory of their lives.”

Faris Yakob, Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Strategist, McCann Erickson New York
“In Chief Culture Officer, Grant McCracken highlights the increasing importance of cultural understanding for brands that wish to remain relevant—and profitable—in the protean flux of the modern marketplace, as he carves out a new role for the 21st century corporation. The best marketers can hope for is to create something that resonates so strongly it becomes part of our cultural fabric. This book is an indispensable tool for achieving that goal.”

A Disappointing Detour Into Superficiality From A Brilliant Author
By Jonathan Cook
I am a big fan of Grant McCracken. I've not just enjoyed his books, but gotten some powerful ideas for my professional life from them over the years. I've read McCracken when he's being insightful. I know what that looks like.

Chief Culture Officer does not have the kind of material Grant McCracken writes when he's been insightful. Instead, it's filled with embarrassing ideas that appear to have been made off-the-cuff.

Actually, that's just the kind of flippant approach to business that McCracken suggests in this book that a Chief Culture Officer ought to be following. He suggests that watching reality TV shows like Real Housewives is a good form of ethnographic research. He advocates for the blind groupthink of brainstorming that Christian Madsbjerg and Mikkel B. Rasmussen deftly exposed in their more recent book The Moment of Clarity.

In the closing pages of Chief Culture Officer, McCracken disparages academic anthropologists who have, as a culture, adopted the practice of writing more like irrelevant philosophers than observers of culture. His criticism is right on target, but in this book he has largely over-reacted to anthropology's academic rhetoric of nonsense by embracing the careless style of the worst business writers.

As an alternative to academic anthropological writing, McCracken suggests that people investigating the culture of consumption try to express ideas that are just barely good enough for the moment, but can be easily thrown away. He uses the metaphor of Thor Heyerdahl barely keeping Kon Tiki afloat, and then throwing it away as soon as he makes landfall.

That's not the kind of material that an enduring brand will be made from.

Corporations need Chief Culture Officers, but not the kind of Chief Culture Officers Grant McCracken writes about in this book. There's a happy medium between abstracted academic nonsense and slapdash improvisation. Chief Culture Officers need to be observant and discerning. They need to be able to practice thick description based on how consumers actually live, and not be content with the thin veneer that can be grasped through a passing glance and a few notes scribbled down on Post-It notes.

I could not be more disappointed in this book. Grant McCracken is a brilliant thinker. Read his other books. They're magnificent. Leave this one alone.

The world outside the corporation: "the body of ideas, emotions, and activities that make up the life of the consumer"
By Robert Morris
I read this book when it was first published in 2009 and then read and reviewed Grant McCracken's more recent book, Culturematic: How Reality TV, John Cheever, a Pie Lab, Julia Child, Fantasy Football . . . Will Help You Create and Execute Breakthrough Ideas. Of all the current observers of the contemporary business world and, especially, of the evolution of workplace culture, I know of no one else who sees more and sees more deeply than he does. Here's a case in point.

Just as Dave Ulrich has been an advocate for several years of adding a chief human resources officer (CHRO) to an organization's management team, McCracken is determined to add another. As he explains, "That's what I want to do with this book [Chief Culture Officer]: invent an office and an officer - the Chief Culture Officer, the person who knows the culture, both its fads and fashions, and its deep, enduring structure. I hope this book will be read by two groups: people inside the corporation who want to make the corporation more intelligent, strategic, and responsive, and people outside the corporation who want to turn their knowledge of culture into a profession and a career."

Years ago, Southwest Airlines' then chairman and CEO, Herb Kelleher, explained the importance of culture to its success: "Maintaining excellent customer services involves a process of getting people to understand the importance of it to them in their daily lives as well as in others'. We were a little concerned as we got bigger that maybe some of our early culture might be lost so we set up a culture committee whose only purpose is to keep the Southwest Airlines culture alive. Before people knew how to make fire, there was a fire watcher. Cave dwellers may have found a tree hit by lightning and brought fire back to the cave. Somebody had to make sure it kept going because if it went out, there would be very serious problems. The fire watcher was the most important person in the tribe. I said to our culture committee, "You are our fire watchers, who make sure the fire does not go out. I think you are the most important committee at Southwest Airlines." As current chairman and CEO Jerry Kelly would be the first to affirm, the same can be said of Southwest Airlines today.

These are among the dozens of passages of greatest interest and value to me, also listed to suggest the scope of McCracken's coverage:

o Dependence on Gurus (Pages 5-15 and 39-40)
o Coca-Cola Company (8-10, 138-141, and 178-179)
o Dan Wieden (17-21)
o Lance Jensen (21-25)
o A.G. Lafley (28-30, 125-127, and 143-144)
o Chris Albrecht (32-36)
o Milton Glaser (36-39)
o Fast and slow cultures and CCOs (41-64)
o Convergence culture and CCOs (61-64)
o CEOs and CCOs (109-112)
o Culture: Breathing out and breathing in (112-117)
o Anthropology (119-120 and 173-178)
o Empathy and CCOs (125-129)
o Branding/Brainstorming (138-143)
o New media (145-150)
o Michael Eisner (155-157)
o Gurus as enemies of culture (161-162)
o Philistines (171-179)

These are among McCracken's concluding observations: "The corporation has been keeping culture at bay for a very long time. Our job is to manage its new spirit of openness. The best way to do this is to demonstrate the value of what we do, as when we supply critical intelligence, help answer the big questions (what business are we in?), see the significance of shifting [especially disruptive] technologies, read sudden changes in consumer taste and preference, sift the perfect storm of the economy for opportunity and danger, and perform better pattern recognition is the first order of business.

"In sum, we are the first generation, and we have to act like one."

I presume to add an observation by Peter Drucker: "Culture eats strategy for breakfast." Members of the "first generation" to which Grant McCracken refers must keep in mind that most of the greatest barriers to change initiatives are cultural in nature, the result of what Jim O'Toole so aptly characterizes as "the ideology of comfort and the tyranny of custom." It is perhaps possible but highly unlikely that an organization can create and then sustain a living, breathing, thriving enterprise without a CCO who has both authority and responsibility as well as sufficient resources to address "the first order of the day." Without such a commitment, there will be no second order of the day.

Capitalism Meets Culture
By Shara J. Karasic
Fabulous book! Years ago I sat in a graduate anthropology class, fascinated by culture but unable to truly understand how obtuse language and postmodernist theories could illuminate it, or allow us to use knowledge of culture to solve real problems. I ended up not pursuing anthropology academically and instead made a career in online community, where it's really important to understand people who use your site and get what will be popular or viral and what tiny details will matter a lot. I have sometimes worked for big corporations that were not quite living and breathing - it puzzled me how to penetrate the mind of the CFO and CEO and make them understand that we really had to get in the mind of the people using our product. Well, here's a great guide to applying anthropology to the business world - in fact, Grant McCracken shows us that every successful brand will need a Chief Cultural Officer at its helm.

Handbook of Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience (Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience)From The MIT Press

Winner of the 2001 Professional/Scholarly Publishing Annual Awards Competition presented by the Association of American Publishers, Inc. in the category of Single Volume Reference: Science.

The publication of this handbook testifies to the rapid growth of developmental cognitive neuroscience as a distinct field. Brain imaging and recording technologies, along with well-defined behavioral tasks—the essential methodological tools of cognitive neuroscience—are now being used to study development. Whereas earlier methodologies allowed scientists to study only adult brains, recent technological advances have yielded methods that can be safely used to study structure-function relations and their development in children's brains. These new techniques combined with more refined cognitive models account for the progress and heightened activity in developmental cognitive neuroscience research.

The handbook contains forty-one original contributions exploring basic aspects of neural development, sensory and sensorimotor systems, language, cognition, and emotion. Aided by recent results in neurobiology establishing that the human brain remains malleable and plastic throughout much of the lifespan, the contributors also explore the implications of lifelong neural plasticity for brain and behavioral development.

Preface Preface

Is your test automation strategy a losing proposition? Are you soured on the notion of automated software testing based on less than adequate past results? Are your test automation silver bullets missing their mark? Are you disappointed in your test automators? We at IDT1 have identified a boilerplate solution, strategies, and ideas, all provided in this book, that can help increase the chances of your automated testing success.

Given the arsenal of system and application software testing strategies, techniques, and solutions, automated software testing is one of the most effective practices that if implemented correctly can help increase testing efficiencies and ultimately reduce the testing cost while contributing to increased systems and software quality in terms of faster, broader, and more efficient defect detection.

This book is a guide that can help organizations implement successful automated software testing programs and efforts. The book does not provide gimmicks or magical solutions, as none exist, but it provides experience-based discussions and recommendations. It includes a thorough dissection of automation issues, such as in Part I of the book, where we describe what automated software testing is and is not; why a business case is required for successful automation, including step-by-step instructions for developing one; why to automate and when. Then we summarize why automation often fails and the pitfalls and blunders that can be prevented; we describe the tools that are available to help implement successful automation efforts, with a focus on open-source testing tools. In Part II of the book we present six keys to successfully implementing automated software testing. These are

  • Key 1: Know Your Requirements
  • Key 2: Develop the Automated Test Strategy
  • Key 3: Test the Automated Software Test Framework (ASTF)
  • Key 4: Continuously Track Progress—and Adjust Accordingly
  • Key 5: Implement AST Processes
  • Key 6: Put the Right People on the Project—Know the Skill Sets Required

IDT conducted two separate surveys related to automated software testing with approximately 700 total responses from test professionals all over the world, across organizations that were diverse in size and in what they do. The survey showed two very consistent themes:

  • About 70% of survey respondents said they believe automation is high-payoff, but they are generally not sure why to automate and how automation applies to their project.
  • Half of the survey respondents also said they felt they lacked the experience, time, or budgets to implement automation.

Most seem to agree: Automated software testing is useful, and an increasing need for it exists. However, the lack of experience seems to be the reason why automation is not implemented more often with a higher success rate. Finding people with the skills for the project is therefore important; a summary of skills required is provided in Chapter 10. For more details on the outcome of this survey, see Chapter 4.

Material Coverage and Book Organization Part I: What Is Automated Software Testing and Why Should We Automate?

Chapter 1, What Is Effective Automated Software Testing (AST)?, describes what automated software testing is. The definition of automated software testing we use throughout this book is the “application and implementation of software technology throughout the entire software testing lifecycle (STL) with the goal to improve STL efficiencies and effectiveness.”

In Chapter 2, Why Automate?, we address this question that is asked so often. Here we discuss the challenges of software testing today and how the time and cost of software testing can be reduced. Reasons for why to automate, laying the foundation to help build the business case discussed step by step in Chapter 3, are presented here.

In Chapter 3, The Business Case, we define a step-by-step approach to defining the business case, which will cover the business need, the reasons for an automated software testing project, the business benefits (tangible and intangible), an analysis of the expected costs and timescales, an investment appraisal, and return on investment (ROI).

Chapter 4, Why Automated Software Testing Fails and Pitfalls to Avoid, clarifies some of the myths and realities surrounding automated software testing. The goal is for companies and organizations to review the lessons described here and not to repeat them during their automated software testing implementations.

Part II: How to Automate: Top Six Keys for Automation Payoff

Once management has been convinced by the business case that was laid out in Part I of this book and understands the pitfalls to avoid and the realities of automated testing, the next step is to determine how to automate. Part II of the book addresses how to successfully implement the various automated software testing tasks. We have determined that successful automated software testing can be achieved by implementing six top keys, described next.

Chapter 5, Key 1: Know Your Requirements, covers the importance of understanding the requirements before developing an automated testing strategy. Here we discuss approaches to determining the problem we are trying to solve along with how to gather information when requirements are not available.

Chapter 6, Key 2: Develop the Automated Test Strategy, discusses developing an automated testing approach in detailed steps, including test environment considerations, configuration management for automated test scripts, and related artifacts, among others. Here we also discuss what to consider when deciding what to automate and the importance of choosing the right tool, whether open-source, vendor-provided, or in-house-developed.

Chapter 7, Key 3: Test the Automated Software Test Framework (ASTF), covers the importance of understanding testing techniques and documenting test cases as part of automated testing. Automators often forget that documentation is still a vital part of the automated test program. The test case documentation serves as the blueprint for the automated software testing efforts. This chapter describes the importance of tracing test cases back to requirements; the content of the test cases, such as needing to include inputs and expected results; and how documented test cases become the basis for developing and implementing the automated tests.

Chapter 8, Key 4: Continuously Track Progress—and Adjust Accordingly, addresses the importance of tracking the goal that was set at the outset of the automation program. For example, during the discussion of business case development in Chapter 3 we explain the need for defining goals; in this chapter we discuss how peer reviews, inspections, and various automation and testing metrics can help measure and track progress against those goals.

Chapter 9, Key 5: Implement AST Processes, points out the need for a lightweight process. Some automated testing scripts can be implemented successfully without much process in place, but in order to effectively implement a large automated testing program a lightweight adaptable process should be in place. This chapter discusses a summary of this process, linking back to the details in various chapters.

Chapter 10, Key 6: Put the Right People on the Project—Know the Skill Sets Required, clarifies the skill sets needed for developing automated software testing, for instance, a skill set similar to that of the software development team, which includes requirements analysis, design, software development, and testing. Key 6 points out that although knowledge of testing techniques and analytical skills is important, effective automated software testing implementation requires software development skills. The skills described here parallel the automated testing process described in Chapter 9.

Audience

Pragmatic and practical help for test automation
    By Lisa Crispin
Although this book is not oriented towards agile software development, it's still a solid resource for anyone new to test automation. It's pragmatic, practical, clearly written, easy to understand. I especially like the six "Keys" for automation payoff. The authors explain the reasons for automating - it might seem obvious to some but many newbies don't see all the potential benefits. The book also blows through automation myths. There's a lot of emphasis on ROI, which is often overlooked.

Where the advice I give on automation differs from this book is making it a whole team effort, rather than the test team only, but that's easier to do in an agile setting. Also, the authors do talk about things like interviewing stakeholders, and getting people with the right skills, these are all so important.

I wish the book had a section on continuous integration and automated build process. I think in another few years nobody will question the need for this, any more than people currently question the need for automated source code management. Whereas a few years ago nobody in my conference tutorials was doing CI, nowadays about a third of the people are. I think it's so critical to have a way to continually run all the automated regression tests every time new code is checked in. The book makes a passing reference to this, and it does mention test automation at different levels starting at the unit level, but it doesn't explain why you need a build process and how to set one up.

Nevertheless, it's a great resource, and will give readers a good grip on the fundamentals of test automation. I get so frustrated when people think it's impossible to automate, or that they have to hire some expensive consultant to get it done. This book will enable teams to be much more successful. It is a good overview of all the different areas where automation can help a team tremendously.

Just be sure to also buy a book that tells you how to set up continuous integration and automated builds, such as _Pragmatic Project Automation_ by Mike Clark, or _Continuous Integration_ by Paul Duvall, Andy Glover and Steve Matyas. Or _Ship It_ by Jared Richardson and William Gwaltney.

Strong on theory and planning, weak on practical implementation
    By James Holmes
This book isn't for everyone, but everyone can get some value out of it. What I mean by that rather confusing statement is that folks working in Agile environments will likely want to throw the book across the room while folks in more bureaucratic environments like CMMI or other waterfall environments will likely get a great deal of value from the book.

I'm an Agile fanatic and I had a difficult time dealing with book's approach which emphasizes spending large amounts of time creating documentation such as requirements traceability matrixes, detailed test plans, etc. My preferred approach is to have testers working side-by-side as part of a team, creating specifications from user stories/requirements and moving those right in to automated test suites via tools like Selenium, Cucumber, or RSpec.

That said, I did indeed get some good value from the book. I found the discussions on making hard evaluations on what to test very worthwhile reading: teams can easily vaporize large amounts of time creating large suites of brittle, unmaintainable automated tests. This book has several really good chapters on using business cases to drive return on investment (ROI) decisions for testing, understanding automated test pitfalls, and adjusting your testing as you progress through your project.

Additionally, one of the book's high points was on building the test team: "Put the Right People on the Project - Know the Skill Sets Required." This is a great chapter which emphasizes starting the search by focusing on how to interview test team members - and how those testers' skills are greatly different than other members of the team.

The book's very academic, dry tone makes for some difficult reading, and few concrete examples are used until very late in the book. Having spent a large number of years either in the DOD or working for DOD contractors, it quickly became apparent that much of the book seemed targeted to folks working in those environments - too many dry acronyms are scattered through the book, adding to the difficulty in reading.

The lack of examples using real tools frustrated me. While the appendices contain some examples of comparing various tools, the book doesn't actually show how a real world testing environment would use those tools. One appendix, eight or nine pages in length, is touted as a "Case Study" but falls short, in my opinion.

Overall it's a decent book. The dry tone and lack of real environments is balanced out by the excellent coverage of team skills and emphasis on selecting how and what you test.

    first, automate the unit tests
    By W Boudville
The authors give you a top level description of why automated software testing is highly desirable, along with detailed guidelines for doing so. The tone is very realistic, making you aware of many issues associated with the topic.

For one thing, you are cautioned to avoid the blandishments of a vendor who might suggest that her product will meet all your testing needs. In the authors' experience, there is no single tool that covers all major operating systems. The book also advises you to look at open source freeware. There is a surprising amount of good stuff freely available, that you might want to check first before considering proprietary products.

The book mentions many reasons for automation. These include manual tester fatigue. But also that some things are very difficult to test in a manual fashion. Often this could be because manual testing is at the GUI level. There could be bugs deep in the code, maybe in computational blocks.

Which also leads to the point that the "testers" for making automated tests often have a different skill set from manual testers. The latter might not be programmers. The former should be, with access to the source code [white box or grey box testing]. Because this gives them knowledge about what automated tests to write, that test critical aspects.

Naively, given the book's nature, we might expect it to say automate everything in sight. But the book's credibility is enhanced by it explaining that this is simply not economically feasible. The estimate is 40-60% of tests to be automated. Table 6.2 in the book is a list of questions that can be applied to each test, to suggest whether a test is suitable for automation. Roughly, tests that will be run often are a high candidate for automation.

The book also strongly recommends extensive unit testing. This is the lowest level of testing and bugs caught here have the best payoff in terms of minimising the cost to fix. A tight software development loop; "agile" as opposed to "waterfall"-like, though the book doesn't use these terms. Plus often unit testing might not be doable at the GUI level anyway, if the units are computational routines. So punting by not having automated unit tests and expecting manual tests to later find bugs in these units is very bad. Of coure, the book also describes higher level tests like regression and functional tests. But first do the unit tests.

In some ways, they could not be more different: the pipe-smoking, Anglican Oxford don and the blue-collar scion of conservative Presbyterianism. But C. S. Lewis and Francis Schaeffer, each in his unique way, fashioned Christian apologetics that influenced millions in their lifetimes. And the work of each continues to be read and studied today. In this book Scott Burson and Jerry Walls compare and contrast for the first time the thought of Lewis and Schaeffer. With great respect for the legacy of each man, but with critical insight as well, they suggest strengths and weaknesses of their apologetics. All the while they consider what Lewis and Schaeffer still have to offer in light of postmodernism and other cultural currents that, since their deaths, have changed the apologetic landscape. This incisive book stands as both an excellent introduction to the work of these two important figures and a fresh proposal for apologetics at the dawn of a new century.

    Review
"Apologetics can create a climate for faith. Standing on the shoulders of giants like these, we can learn to tell the Story ever more beautifully and effectively." (Clark H. Pinnock)

"Burson and Walls offer students of Lewis and Schaeffer a rare treat: fresh insights into the commonalities and dissonances between these influential thinkers, climaxed by a compelling, holistic agenda for apologetics in the next millennium." (Bruce L. Edwards, author of A Rhetoric of Reading: C. S. Lewis's Defense of Western Literacy)

"This is a first-rate study of Schaeffer and Lewis. It is also a splendid exploration of the issues they sought to identify and explore. Fans of Schaeffer and Lewis will be challenged to enrich what they have already found; newcomers will be drawn into a conversation of striking clarity and depth." (William J. Abraham, Perkins School of Theology, Southern Methodist University)

A Contrast That Could Have Been Done Better But Should Have Been Done
    By Jeffrey C. Reynolds
This book is deep, dealing with a pair of great apologists. It is not perfect, but it still is a great book, though I'm not in the majority. I'm reviewer #9 of this book, and the majority ruling is four stars (I'm only the second five star), with a pair of three star reviews and one each of two and one stars. So you might want to read the other reviews rather than rely on mine alone.

A friend of mine gave me this book because a) she thought I would enjoy it and b) it was too deep for her. It is a deep book -- it took me six months to work through it (though I've also read . . . and reviewed . . . other books during that time).

I started this book with some knowledge of both Lewis and Schaeffer, having read some of their writings, but not being very familiar. In reading this book, I found a common soul in Francis Schaeffer. However, this book leans toward Lewis. In every area where Lewis and Schaeffer disagreed, the authors sided with Lewis consistently while I just as consistently sided with Schaeffer. This should not be surprising, though, because both authors teach at Asbury which is closer to Lewis than Schaeffer in theology and both have written on Lewis. Thus, the book has a bias, but not an agenda. The authors, for example, pointed out that Schaeffer is the one with theological education.

Personally, I think one thing the authors should have done was to not comment. This book would have been stronger if they left their point of view out of it and let the reader make up his own mind after seeing the contrast of the two apologists.

The final chapter is useful in taking the insights of these two men and taking the lessons to the modern time.

One side comment that I need to make. About a year ago, I never heard of Molina and his view of middle knowledge. In a year, I've read three books referring to his views including this one. The first one was written by a compatabilist, while this book takes the opposite view. (The third was "The Apologetics Study Bible", where one of the writers was promoting Molina.)

Lessons Indeed from Two Valiant Christian Warriors
    By A Customer
Burson and Walls have written an insightful, timely book here which draws upon the thoughts and ideas of two men, whom they rightly proclaim as the most influencial Christian apologists of our century. This book should be widely read by Christians everywhere, but it most likely won't be, because interest in theology and apologetics doesn't seem to be exactly thriving these days. Still, to those who feel that theology matters, this book is chock full of useful information. Schaeffer and Lewis are shown here to have held many different views towards issues such as predestination, the atonement, and divine revelation, but one thing they most certainly did agree upon: the absolute necessity for Christians to engage their culture with the liberating truths of their Master, Jesus. Burson and Walls make this clear, and glean some very practical lessons for the rest of us to take and ponder while continuing to "bear the Light" in the world as these two giants did. This book reveals the genius, passion and courage of both men, and I for one hope and pray that it will encourage believers everywhere to follow in their footsteps.

Use this as a Tool to Examine Your Own Faith
    By Bruce K. Day
I selected this book to read after reading Hugh Hewett's "The Embarassed Believer". I wanted to get a better feel for what apologetics is about. What better place to go than to the two greatest apologists of the 20th century.
Burson and Walls certainly have a point of view, but I do not think that it detracts from their comparisons of Lewis and Schaeffer. I found that it pushed me to hold up my own beliefs to the same analyses they used on their subjects. I learned where I have strengths and where there are gaping holes in my understanding of the faith.
The territory covered is quite expansive, many of the areas of belief were outside of any regular theological discussions by lay leaders in my church experience. As a Christian called to lay ministry, I have found it important to carefully examine my own beliefs about the nature of the relationship between God and Man before trying to take the "good news" to those outside of the church.
As most comparisons of human-beings are, there are flaws. We are all flawed, but we all have something to say about who and what God is and does in the world. This book gives us a framework to build and articulate our own understanding of what faith in Jesus represents in the millenium ahead.
