When I saw that this story took place in 1900 Montana I almost missed out on a great story. On a lark I listened to the sample on the way to work. I couldn't wait until lunchtime so that I could purchase it and to continue reading. I've always enjoyed historical western romances, this book whichis part of a series of m/f romances, was a very pleasant surprise. It definitely does not need to be read after the other books in the series. It is a detailed story all within itself. Gay romance readers may be surprised to learn how similarly and differently gay men were treated in comparison to modern times.
Being in the closet has been a necessity just as much then as some still believe they need to now. Also there are those heroic / foolish? men who never felt they should hid who they truly were. Inevitably these two polar opposites cross paths with either fiery or furtive results. The poignancy of these two men's emotions tugs at the readers heartstrings. The depth of love for friends and family is tested. Obstinacy and foolhardiness pepper this thoroughly told story.
Doing what is right for you does not mean it is also applicable to others. Bravery can be demonstrated in a variety of ways. Using a woman as a beard has been a long time practice of some closeted men. This is a moving tale of friendship, lust, sacrifice, family, perceptions, existing vs. being happy, being seen as a "normal" man, wanting something seemingly impossible to obtain, being true to one's self and not being afraid to love.

Guys need love too!

Merry Farmer does it again!! I enjoyed this book. I am so glad she wrote Phin's story.

Phineas Bell has been the banker for Cold Springs for years. He has contented himself with his job and his friends who have become his family. Everyone in town knows he's a "confirmed bachelor" and left it at that. It isn't until the new sheriff comes to town that he begins to realize that he just might get his happily ever after if he would just let his barriers down. It will take a lot of trials on both sides for them to find their "Somebody to Love."

This is a M/M story. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a good story that has love and a mystery on the side.

Epic!

I have never read a romantic book about men before and to be honest, I was kind of dreading it because I feared it would be weird. But it wasn't - not at all. Merry Farmer has written a beautiful book that makes everything seem so natural that you'll almost forget that these two are guys - it just isn't that important - the important thing is that they are two people in love who are willing to go to great lengths in order to be together.

As usual, Ms. Farmer's stories are filled with historical treats, love and angsty action adventure - keeping the reader at the edge of the seat most of the time, burning to turn the page.

Lastly, I'd like to add that I'm already missing Cold Spings now that the next book may be years away.

Dr. Everett Worthington Jr. has dedicated his life to the study and teaching of marriage and family-related topics.

He is a professor of psychology at Virginia Commonwealth University and has taught at the Universityrsquo;s American Psychological Association–accredited psychology (counseling) program for almost twenty years. A prolific writer and producer of multimedia resources, Dr. Worthington has published twelve books on marriage and family topics and has several others in press or under contract. Additionally, he has published over one hundred chapters or papers in refereed journals and has produced numerous videotapes and audiotapes. Dr. Worthington has won national recognition for his research and teaching and is frequently requested as a speaker before national audiences.

He has provided over one hundred convention presentations and colloquia and has given over fifty presentations at professional workshops and conferences, mostly on marital therapy and enrichment. A short book, with valuable insights

Simple, generally pretty non-religious (a few Christian references, but I wouldn't call it a "Christian" book) with valuable insights on the value and virtues of humility. This book includes short stories and anecdotes about humility and explains that it can't just be willed. It's something we have to practice. I liked it and got a lot out of reading it.

Wonderful Raw Uncook Book!!!

Amazingly wonderful and thorough book! I've learned so much from following Tanya's blog over the last 5 years, and it was an honor to purchase her book. Her recipes are amazingly accessible, easy and super delicious--she makes it so simple to incorporate plant-based recipes into your diet. One of the biggest challenges to the raw food lifestyle for me has been the crazy expensive ingredients and overly complicated recipes. But Tanya's recipes are the opposite--I was so thrilled to see how easy everything was to create, and how easy it was to gather the ingredients with not too much expense. But more than that, how amazingly tasty, satisfying and delicious the results were. I made 5 recipes from The Uncook Book yesterday with ease, and now feel more ready than ever for healthy eating this week. Personal favorites are the Sunburgers, Raw Choc Chip Cookies, Mock Tuna Salad (so good!) and the Onion Bread. Simply amazing.

Amazing book, packed full of recipes for every occasion, with great advice and stunning photography!

first become aware of Tanya Maher and her Blog - Better Raw; through following the blog of another British health food Guru -Deliciously Ella. I was hooked. By the writing, the tone, the message and the recipes!

Tanya's journey to discovering and embracing a raw diet, began in a rather horrifying manner -with a car accident! Prior to that, like most teenagers, she ate a typical diet; ate ice cream and chocolate with abandonment, and did not mind periods of stress, as they were a weight loss aid. But after the car accident; which left her with many serious injuries, she could not keep any food down and risked losing her pancreas. Not willing to undergo this major surgery; she ate foods she could tolerate which turned out to be raw, highly nutritious and natural. Her parents later fully embraced such a diet, and as their health improved, Tanya's interest grew and her life changed -the increase in energy, health and approved appearance was enough. And now through these pages we can all learn those secrets!

This book is very comprehensive, beginning with a guide to raw food: What is uncooking? Reasons to love Raw Food. Things I wish I knew (including the fact that chocolate IS on the menu....woo hoo). A great guide to nutrients. Then the equipment and pantry guide. Now as this is a raw cookbook -like many others before it, a juicer, and a good food processor come into the mix, and a lot of recipes do call for a food dehydrator so it might be worth baring in mind, before you choose this book!

Then we go into recipes - drinks include juices, with some really nice concoctions that are a little different to others I have seen, smoothies, shakes, nut ,milks. and hot drinks, so a little more comprehensive than any other raw book I own which makes this a standout! Then comes breakfast with raw versions of porridge , granola, bacon (made with eggplant) , even quiche and crepes are featured! The soups and salad section follows - I enjoyed the Kale salad tonight as I had a load of kale I needed to use, and it was both simple and delicious! There is even a raw version of Pad Thai which I will review after I make!

Main meals include a raw pasta, stuffed peppers, nut free pizza, falafels, curry; all kinds of traditional meals made raw and packed full of easy to source ingredients! This is perhaps the thing I like most about this book -I own some raw cookbooks that require a laundry list of weird ingredients that I cannot find in even the most gourmet health stores; but this is not the case here. Fresh veggies are front and foremost!

Sauces and sides is again comprehensive - think avocado fries, hummus, gravy, almond butter, bread, caramelized onions!! Then we have a huge dessert section, which, like the rest of this book, is accompanied by beautiful and mouth water photographs! I cannot wait to try the minty chocolate bark, the truffles or the mousse! There is a squashed berry and white chocolate cheesecake which looks beautiful and pies, cakes and ice cream!

In thinking of everything there is a kids section with versions of spaghetti, stunning ice pops., and veggie wraps! Even a version of Nutella -Rawtella which I know is good having made it in the past! There is a party food section and on the go section which I love as there are great ideas for lunch that are portable and easy!

The author ends with a very handy super foods glossary, ideas on meal planning and further resources listing websites, books and shops! Very useful!

Tanya Maher is a master raw chef, raw recipe book author and raw restaurateur (in the UK). This recipe book is her first hard cover volume. She also has a suite of ebooks, published under her maiden name, Alekseeva, that are beautiful and instructive. Raw food prep can be pretty involved and frequently make use of some fairly exotic ingredients. Most of the recipes in this book call for readily accessible ingredients. Raw recipes for crackers and breads require effort, such as pizza or tacos, both of which are in this book, but otherwise, the recipes are no more complex than any cooked recipes I've made. The book has a kid's chapter, a party food chapter and a to-go chapter. So far I've loved all of the dishes I've made from this book. Just tried my first bowl of raw borscht. Loved it - made me feel really nourished instead of just full. Looking forward to the falafel feast for my birthday!

Five Scenarios Based on H.P. Lovecraft Tales

The House of R’lyeh contains five Call of Cthulhu scenarios that follow or expand upon events in five of H.P. Lovecraft’s stories: “Pickman’s Model”, “The Haunter of the Dark”, “The Hound”, “Arthur Jermyn”, and “The Nameless City”. Set in Boston, Providence, the British Isles, continental Europe, and the Middle East, none of the scenarios need be played at set dates or in a set order, but they could be run in the order presented to form a loose campaign using optional link between scenarios to draw investigators from one to the other.

Alternatively, the scenarios may be used to supplement classic Call of Cthulhu campaigns such as The Shadows of Yog-Sothoth which suggests that its component scenarios should be interspersed with others.

The first scenario in this book, “The Art of Madness” follows on from the events of the Lovecraft tale “Pickman’s Model”. Artist of the macabre, Richard Upton Pickman, is now a ghoul living a subterranean netherworld beneath Boston creating a new school of art. There are several ways that player characters might be drawn into investigating his macabre activities and, while dangerous, Pickman’s intent is not particularly lethal. The difficulty for investigators will be to resolve the situation without becoming compromised.�

While in New England, the investigators discover “The Crystal of Chaos”, a retelling of the events of Lovecraft’s “The Haunter of the Dark”. Hired by professors of Miskatonic University, the investigator seek out a fabled crystal with origins in Ancient Egypt, but they soon find a far greater evil lurks in an abandoned church in Providence. This scenario originally appeared in Different Worlds issue 34, May/June 1984, and has been expanded and revised in this publication.

“The Return of the Hound” draws investigators an auction in Yorkshire, in England, where a rare edition of the Necronomicon is going to be sold. The previous owners, the decadent occultists from Lovecraft’s “The Hound”, are dead, as that tale recounts, but what they unearthed in ‘a Holland churchyard’ has grown strong, and has schemes of its own to fulfill. The amount of danger the investigators face is dependent on how determined they are not to let this Necronomicon fall into the wrong hands.�

“The Jermyn Horror” takes place in Britain, beginning in London and then moving to Huntingdon with the investigators seeking a rare edition of Regnum Congo, reputedly to be found in the crumbling estate of the deceased Jermyn family as described in Lovecraft’s “Arthur Jermyn”. The search is imperiled by a creature that a Jermyn brought back from the Congo some three hundred years ago that haunts the mansion seeking a human vessel for its escape.�

“Nameless City, Nameless Terrors” concludes this collection with an expedition into the heart of Arabia’s Empty Quarter in search of Irem as described in Lovecraft’s “The Nameless City”. This scenario requires investigators to risk their bodies and their minds as, in the midst of the desolate ruins of Irem, the investigators learn something of the nature of the Great Old Ones, and perhaps forestall the rising of Cthulhu from his watery grave.�

Succeeds in capturing the core of Lovecraft

Having read through the whole book I must say I am impressed with how the scenarios build upon Lovecrafts tales, and incorporates them as backgrounds for these 5 scenarios. The 4 first are mysteries and are quite exciting and well written; the Jermyn Horror is perhaps my favourite one. The scenarioes gives you background information and clues that you would never make as a keeper yourself.

The scenarios are varied in location, and can easily be adapted to Delta Green (1990's) CoC. It is kind of hard to give a review of an adventure book without giving spoilers, but from mummies to evil spirits to cthulhus temples it seems that Chaosium decided to tackle the source material and to not publish another "5 haunted houses" scenario book. There is even a rather climatic alternative ending, that touches slightly upon the whole meta of the Chtulhu mythos, to the campaign that the book opens up to string out of the scenarioes.

Production quality is good, with large font, easier to read in the not so always brightly lit gaming rooms. Though there was at least one map where the quality was slightly pixellated (page 158).

The book is written and designed by Aleksander Lavrentiev, who is the grandson of Rodchenko and Stepanova and the curator of their archive. Lavrentiev's text is accompanied by excerpts from Stepanova's own diary, with its fresh insights and lively commentary on Soviet art, and a memoir by her daughter. But the real discovery is the 370 illustrations - 45 in color - nearly all of which are published here for the first time, which reveal an artist startling in her accomplishments.

Like Rodchenko, Stepanova was among the founders of Constructivism, a contributor to the famous Moscow 5 x 5 = 25 exhibition held in 1921, and significant in shaping Russian's visual culture during the turbulent years following the revolution. Lavrentiev covers every aspect of Stepanova's production against the complex background of the period. The comments in the little oilskin notebook that she kept almost continuously during the 1920s keenly revive the events of the time; the illustrations allow us to discover and enjoy the wide range of Stepanova's talents as expressed in paintings and geometric constructions, sets and costumes, fashion designs, posters, and typography.

Potential lost

I recently got Trent Hauck's book "scikit-learn Cookbook", and am posting a short review of it.

First of all I'd like to point out that this book isn't for beginners or new entrants to Data Science. The book assumes an intermediate level of sophistication in terms of methods covered and statistical/computer science algorithms presented. Without some background this book will be very difficult.

The book is split into 5 chapters, from Premodel Workflow to Postmodel Workflow, with intervening chapters on regression, clustering and classification. The book is rather dense, and covers a lot of material. The later chapters are smoother in style than the earlier chapters, making for easier reading.

However there is a lot of code, and the code isn't necessarily encapsulated within each recipe, so it was sometimes hard to replicate the books code without searching for required code from earlier recipes. Also, since some algorithms are random in nature, the author neglects to explicitly set the random number seed, and so there is no way for the reader to exactly replicate the results. If this doesn't bother you, and you just want to see how the process works, fine. There is also rather haphazard introduction to packages outside of scikit-learn, like pandas, patsy, scipy, and others. This makes the discourse confusing in places and doesn't provide a straightforward recipe for the problem at hand. It is good that other packages and choices are mentioned, but they need to be less prominent to make the reading easier.

The editing of this book leaves something to be desired. There are typos, of course. The fact that Guassian processes are introduced in Chapter 1 even before regression, while the text for that recipe refers to the regression recipes as "as we have already seen" is a huge gaffe. Gaussian process regression thematically does not belong in Chapter 1 at all!! Better editing and proofing could have made this book much better.

One minor peeve. In talking about scaling variables, the author refers to a standard normal distribution. What he achieves in that recipe is just mean-variance standardization, and has nothing to do with the normal distribution. Just doing mean-variance standardization does not ensure normality in any way, so the premise of that recipe is misleading. Mean-variance standardization can be a good thing. but doesn't account for skewness and other characteristics in the data distribution that would continue to look non-normal.

Overall, I think there is lot of good material in the book if you go looking for it, but the organization and editing deficiencies make it, in my opinion, a case of potential lost. This book could have been much better.

Disappointing

Most scikit learn books are 'introductory', this one holds out the hope of being written for people who know what sklearn is and it does achieve that. However, it is very poorly written; it looks like it was written in a great rush to get published and that greatly detracts from its value. By and large, YouTube is a better source.

Have it close to your mouse! Most likely you'll find find the recipe you need for your specific problem!

'Over 50 recipes (I’ve counted 54!) to incorporate into every step of the data science pipeline, from feature extraction to model building and evaluation’. Could we ask more? Trent Hauck holds degrees in Accountancy and Finance but, he knows about Pydata, Pandas, IPython and Google analytics. That is the origin of this book: experience.
Let’s start with a caveat. Other books invest a whole chapter describing the tools you need and how to install it. Strategy here is different. In the preface the author list the tools & versions we will need plus, every recipe is structured in, the following, sections: ‘Getting ready’ (what to expect in the recipe and how to set up the software or settings requested for this recipe), ‘How to do it’ (the steps to cook the recipe), ‘How it works’ (a summary of what happened in previous section), ‘There’s more’ (additional information about the recipe, just to open our appetite), and finally, ‘See also’ (references to the recipe.) The preface summarizes, also, basic conventions followed in the book. However (another caveat) I believe the author presumes the reader either has set scikit-learn or will be able to set it correctly. If not your case, have in mind that ALL the essential information is in scikit-learn.org. Do not be afraid to do questions in places as ‘stackoverflow’, you know, ‘whistle while you type…and everything will work!’
Now, Chapter 1 is about ‘Premodel Workflow’: how to prepare a dataset for modeling and how scikit-learn helps us to improve the preprocessing steps.
Chapter 2, ‘Working with Linear Models’: identify problems for which a linear model is acceptable, introduces the most used models.
Chapter 3, ‘Building Models with Distance Metrics’: topics that arise when looking for the similarity between data sets.
Chapter 4, ‘Classifying with scikit-learn’: methods used to find if a data point is member of a class.
Finally in Chapter 5, ‘Postmodel Workflow’: pick a basic model obtained from a recipe and tune it to get and even better result.
Let ‘s see a bit more, the first recipe in Chapter 1. As a starting tip, the author explains the book was written using scikit-learn0.15, NumPy 1.9 and pandas 0.13. A short summary on the first recipe, ‘Getting sample data from external sources’, is a hands on exercise 2 pages long. ‘Getting ready’ “, how to get and load the datasets. ‘How to do it’, how to load datasets, inspect its contents and fetch a specific portion of the dataset. Then, at ‘How it works’, the author explains us what happen when a dataset is loaded and becomes a “dictionary”. In ‘There’s more’, we learn what happens with external datasets, how to configure that behavior and how to check the default location. Finally, in ‘See also’ we are told the UCI Machine Learning Repository is the place to find many sample datasets, other places being government agencies, Kaggle competitions and KDD.
Summarizing, this is a must read for everyone interested in Machine Learning and particularly, on the use of a open tool as ‘scikit-learn’. Must likely there is one or more recipe that fits your particular interests and needs. A great book, something we must have in our desk, close to the mouse.
